My father, a formerly yeshiva bocher and ordained as shohet in Lita, didn't see the inside of a synagogue since his aliyah to Eretz Israel in 1925 until 1973 when we came to celebrate our own Gilad's barmitzva. He did it again 4 weekes hence for my nephew Eitan's bar mitzva, and was that.
