I was just googling Ernie Harwell an...Rabbi Miller,
I was just googling Ernie Harwell and looking for any news stories or postings on him that I may have missed in recent weeks and I stumbled across your blog.
I want to prefact this by saying that I am not Jewish--I am a Catholic who has a deep admiration and respect for Judaism (I feel that many Catholic beliefs and practices have roots in Judaism). However, even though I am not Jewish, I found your tribute to Ernie Harwell to be very touching and heartfelt. I, like you, felt devastated when I heard the news of Ernie's death. He was such a big part of my growing up years and I realized when he died, just how many of the happy moments of my childhood involved his voice somewhere in the background. And, as I grew older, I learned that he was not only a great broadcaster, but an even better human being.
I thought that one sentence you wrote---that something about Ernie struck you as so very Jewish---was very touching. What a beautiful thing--he was not a specifically religious figure like a clergy member--yet this man lived his life in such a way that Christians and Jews look up to him as a great example of what it's all about to live out our respective faiths.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for writing this post about Ernie.
Matt BohnMatthew Bohnnoreply@blogger.com
