Answering the phone on Shabbat for the President when he is Director of Management and Budget hardly constitutes "pekuach nefesh". It is hard to imagine how saving a life enters into that position, especially considering that "pkuach nefesh" requires a direct causal relationship, e.g. an EMT called to an accident. An indirect relationship is not permitted, e.g. decideing on Shabbat who the EMT is to be.

I find it of interest that the ruling was made by an Orthodox Rabbi which I expect makes it "kosher" for our Orthodix brethern. Of course had one of our Rabbi's made the same ruling there would a hew and a cry from them that we are making a mockery of Halacha.

First, Jews have the right of return to Israel which allows them to instantly become citizens if they move there. American Jews do not automatically hold dual citizenship just by virtue of the fact that they are Jewish.

Secondly, the move to bring an observant Orthodox Jew in to the position of Chief of Staff is just Obama pandering to try to get the Jewish vote back that he has been losing due to his obvious indifference to (at best), or dislike (more likely) of Israel.

Third, much of the above is nothing more than anti-Semitism. According to the Mishnah, "And whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world". Please note that it does not say anything about whether that life is Jewish or not. A Jewish life is not considered any more sacred than that of a non-Jew. Check out Bridget Gabriel, a Lebanese Christian, who tells of her family's escape to Israel and the unbiased treatment her mother received in an Israeli hospital and the fact that she saw enemies of Israel treated ahead of Israeli soldiers based on the severity of their injuries rather than the uniform they wore.

The world's population is 7 billion people, of which there are only about 14 million Jews, making the Jewish population of the world only .002% (2 one-hundredths of one percent). To put that in perspective, the non-Jewish portion of the world is 99.998%. That's one Jew for every 499 non-Jews. How would you like to try to defend yourself against 499 people? In the US, the Jewish population is about 6 million, only about 2% of the population. How does only 2 out of every 100 people control the country?

Jews are influential due to their talent and drive and have achieved, in relation to their small numbers, great success and recognition in many fields. But to claim that they control anything outside of their synagogues is ludicrous.

Those who wrote the anti-Semitic rants (above) are uninformed, unenlightened bigots who have no grasp of reality.

My understanding is that main stream halachic Judaism (including Orthodox Judiasm) applies save a life to all, not just Jews. We had just such a discussion in a Young Israel shul some years back.
